🚑 Seek urgent care if:
- Vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, severe or crushing chest pain (which can be cardiac), difficulty or pain on swallowing, or unintentional weight loss.→ Do not self-treat. Seek prompt medical/emergency evaluation.
Classical understanding
- Described as vidagdha (improperly transformed) pitta producing sourness and burning; aggravated by unsuitable diet and irregular meals.
General self-care (safe for most)
- Favour cooling, non-oily, non-spicy foods and regular meals; avoid excess sour, salty, fried and fermented foods, alcohol and skipping meals; do not lie down immediately after eating.
Recurrent, severe or persistent acidity should be evaluated by a Vaidya or physician (and cardiac causes of chest pain excluded).
