गलगण्ड · Galagaṇḍa · Medical — see a Vaidya

The classical neck-swelling disorder (Galaganda), the closest traditional reference for goitre; any thyroid change needs medical assessment. Educational only.

Condition🕑 1 min read
🚑 Seek urgent care if:
  • A rapidly growing neck lump, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a hoarse voice, or symptoms of a very over- or under-active thyroid (racing heart, tremor, or extreme fatigue and swelling).
→ See a doctor promptly for assessment and blood tests.
Classical understanding
  • Galagaṇḍa is described as a kapha-medas swelling at the front of the neck; it is the closest classical reference for goitre and thyroid enlargement, and kāñcanāra is the dravya traditionally associated with such swellings.
General self-care (safe for most)
  • Keep a healthy weight and active routine and eat a balanced whole-food diet with adequate iodine from normal dietary sources. Any neck swelling or thyroid symptom must be checked by a doctor first — self-care is only ever alongside that.
Thyroid conditions are diagnosed by blood tests and managed medically; never self-treat or stop thyroid medication. Ayurvedic measures are supportive and educational only.
